Periodontal disease is caused by inadequate oral hygiene over time and is exacerbated by smoking. This is a disease of the supporting structures of the teeth: the gum and bone. If left untreated, over time periodontal disease will result in pus under the gums, painful abscesses in the gums, very bad breath and loose teeth which will fall out. So it is important to do something before the latter happens.

A full head modern Xray is very important as it shows the roots of your teeth and the supporting bone [also the lack of supporting bone] so you will be able to SEE your problem.

Your dentist will discuss everything with you and will refer you to have treatment with our hygienists to have your teeth thoroughly cleaned.

Do not worry about this – the hygienists are expert in their field and they are very sympathetic and supportive. They will see you through all the treatment cheerfully and sympathetically.

It is important also for you to know that a long-term infection such as periodontal disease is very unhealthy for your body and new evidence

 shows that persons suffering from periodontal disease are more at risk of cadiovascular disease & have twice the risk of
  suffering a fatal heart attack
 points to periodontal disease being a risk to babies. Women who have it may be 7 times more likely to have a small or
  premature baby.
