Root canal treatment is carried out by the dentist to save teeth which are painfully infected and abscessed. It is a complex procedure which involves 2-3 visits with your dentist.

Your dentist will remove the nerve tissue or its infected remains from your tooth’s root canals under local anaesthetic.
Molar teeth have several root canals. This, combined with curved roots and difficult access (as they are at the back of your mouth) means that the procedure is more complex for your dentist and so, to do properly, will take much longer.

This filling/sealing of the canals is very important and great care will be taken by your dentist,and your dentist will prescribe antibiotics where necessary.

If infection persists around the roots of the tooth your dentist can carry out a minor surgical procedure [apicectomy].
Teeth become brittle and discoloured after the infected nerve tissue has been removed and if heavily filled are very likely to fracture.

So your dentist will probably tell you that it is best for you to have the tooth crowned eventually to strengthen and protect it and to improve its cosmetic appearance.
